International Cooperation -
Call for applications!

For fourteen years, the Canadian Awards for International Cooperation have recognized the achievements of Canadian businesses and organizations in supporting sustainable economic growth and social programs to reduce poverty in the developing countries of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in the countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe.

These prestigious awards will be presented as part of the International Development Days program to be held at the Delta Fredericton Hotel from May 22 - 24, 2007 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

East Africa:
AfDB's US$92 million
Supports Road Infrastructure

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group signed loan and grant agreements, equivalent to US$92 million, with Kenya, Tanzania and two East African regional organizations, to finance road infrastructure in the region. The two projects address barriers to regional integration such as facilitating movement of goods and people across national boundaries, and the provision of physical infrastructure.

Argentina:
IDB Loans US$1.2 billion
for Road Infrastructure

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a US$1.2 billion loan to Argentina for a program to improve, expand and rehabilitate road networks in the northern provinces. The multiple-works investment loan program will finance road works of approximately 600 kilometers in the provincial network and 870 kilometers in the national network. The program will make sustainable improvements in the accessibility, safety and efficiency of roads in the provinces of Catamarca, Corrientes, Chaco, Formosa, Jujuy, Misiones, Tucumán, Salta and Santiago del Estero.

UNIDO and Microsoft Launch
Technology Solution to Support FDI

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Microsoft launched a new technology solution prototype to support foreign direct investment (FDI). The new investment-monitoring platform, a key component of the UNIDO Africa Investment Promotion Agency initiative, aims to drive investment, enhance communication between governments in Africa and investors, and foster sustainable economic growth.

China:
World Bank Loans US$147 million
for Environmental Clean-up

The World Bank approved a US$147 million loan to the People's Republic of China to help finance the Second Shandong Environment Project. Financed projects include the development of wastewater collection networks and treatment facilities, and training for provincial and local project owners and government decision makers. This project supports sustainable improvements in the environmental conditions of nine participating municipalities, cities and counties in Shandong province.

ADB's Toolkit
Addresses Gender Issues

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) launched the Gender, Law and Policy Toolkit to help analyze gender issues in proposed loans, grants, and technical assistance projects. The toolkit will guide staff and consultants on how to more effectively promote gender equality. It provides background materials, Internet links, checklists, sample assurances, and other tools for integrating gender law and policy considerations in country partnership strategies and projects.

New Canadian Executive Director
appointed to the
Inter-American Development Bank

Vinita Watson was appointed to the Inter-American Development Bank as Executive Director for Canada on February 1st, 2007. Prior to her appointment, she spent one year as a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Canada School of Public Service, conducting research on multi-level engagement between the Canadian and US federal governments. From July 2001 to November 2005 Mrs. Watson was the Assistant Deputy Minister of the International Trade and Finance Branch of the Canadian Department of Finance. Mrs. Watson's previous positions with the Government of Canada include Director General Corporate Governance at the Department of Industry, Director General Consumer Affairs, Deputy Federal Negotiator for the Internal Trade Negotiations and Senior Advisor, Program Review for the Privy Council Office.

Mrs. Watson has an MPA from Harvard University, an M.A. from Michigan State University, and a Bachelor's Honours Degree from Delhi University.

World Bank
Supports Private
Sector Development

The World Bank approved a US$25 million grant to improve Afghanistan's investment climate and infrastructure facilities. The Private Sector Development (PSD) Support Project aims to provide land services and facilities including electricity, water and telecommunications, and build capacity of government agencies to develop and implement PSD related programs. The project will fund the construction of an industrial park and attract private investment in a variety of sectors, particularly light manufacturing, carpets and food products.

Indonesia:
World Bank's US$123 million
Supports Agricultural Revitalization

The World Bank recently approved a US$123 million Farmer Empowerment through Agricultural Technology and Information project. This project will help 400,000 farm households - an estimated two million rural people in 71 districts, improve productivity and incomes over the next five years. The project will also support development of a market oriented agricultural services system based on partnerships between farmers' groups, public agencies and the private sector.

Doing Business
in South Asia 2007

The International Finance Corporation and the World Bank recently released a joint report titled Doing Business in South Asia 2007. The report compares business regulations in eight countries in the South Asia region and examines twelve major cities in India, six in Pakistan, and four in Bangladesh. Report findings indicate that India and Pakistan are the top performers and that the region did comparatively well in business start-up and investor protection.

AfDB Spends US$1.6 billion
to Finance NEPAD
Infrastructure Projects

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group is mobilizing US$1.6 billion to fund infrastructure projects of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). Projects are concentrated in the transport and energy sectors, and include a Kenya-Zambia electricity connectivity project, the construction of the 1,600-kilometre Kenya-Ethiopia highway and the Kenya-Uganda oil pipeline. The AfDB also hosts the Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA) Secretariat to address Africa's capacity constraints and facilitate the scaling-up of resources for infrastructure.

Vietnam:
World Bank Provides Over
US$4 billion in Credits

Over the next five years, the World Bank will provide more than US$800 million a year - in long-term interest-free credits, to help Vietnam build on its development achievements. This represents more than US$4 billion from 2007 to 2011- the term of the Bank's Country Partnership Strategy. Supported initiatives will range from the regulation of infrastructure, to social insurance, and to the development of modern planning and budget systems. Initiatives will focus on four areas that include: improving the business environment, strengthening social inclusion, better managing the environment and natural resources, and improving governance.

World Bank's Interim Strategy
Grants US$28 million

The World Bank's new Interim Strategy for Haiti projects financial assistance of up to US$82 million in grants - over the next 18 months, to support the country's development agenda. Additionally, the Bank approved two grants for a total of US$28 million to support economic governance reform (US$23 million) and water and sanitation in rural areas (US$5 million).

IDB Fund Creates
Clean Energy Markets Cluster

The Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) Multilateral Investment Fund created a new cluster of activities focused on Promoting Clean Energy Markets. The cluster will promote new financial instruments in the clean energy market and assist in the creation of capacities required by smaller firms to serve this market. This initiative also helps small enterprises improve their competitiveness and access clean energy market opportunities.

IFC Expands
Global Trade Finance Program

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) approved a US$500 million increase to its Global Trade Finance Program, bringing the program ceiling to US$1 billion. Under this program, the IFC issues trade finance guarantees and provides technical assistance to local financial institutions that need either technical skills training or capacity building assistance. With this increase, the program is now able to continue expanding its global coverage in Cambodia, Nepal, and Yemen, and in post-conflict countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.

World Bank's US$200 million
Expands Railway Capacity

The World Bank approved a US$200 million loan for the Third National Railway Project in Guizhou and Yunnan, in Western China. This project aims to provide a major increase in capacity to the Liupanshui-Zhanyi section of the Guiyang-Kunming railway line and improve the service quality of passenger and freight transport. Upon completion, the project will quadruple the capacity of the line and significantly improve travel times.

World Bank Supports
Agriculture Productivity and
Water Management

The World Bank approved US$485 million in assistance to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu to increase agriculture productivity by modernizing irrigation infrastructure. The Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water-Bodies Restoration and Management Project covers over 600,000 hectares in 63 selected sub-basins throughout the State, and proposes an integrated approach to synergize the activities of multiple agencies involved with irrigation, on-farm development, agriculture, horticulture, marketing, livestock, fisheries, and applied research.

World Bank Supports
Forestry Development

The World Bank approved a US$100 million loan to help China develop and protect its forest resources. The loan supports the Guangxi Integrated Forestry Development and Conservation Project, which aims to improve the effectiveness of forest management practices and enhance the conservation of globally significant biodiversity in selected areas of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Bank loan finances the establishment of high-yield timber plantations, the introduction of superior genetic materials, and forest management technologies. The Bank loan is supplemented by a US$5.25 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for biodiversity conservation.

AfDB Grants US$23 million for
Distance Learning in Southern Africa

The African Development Bank (AfDB) approved an African Development Fund grant equivalent to US$22.6 million for capacity building with the Open and Distance Learning Project (ODL) in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). This project puts in place frameworks to support the more effective deployment of ODL and develops capacity at all levels in the 14 SADC member states. The project will also finance two regional ODL Centers of Specialization (CoS), provide the required technical assistance, and support CoS training needs including full time technical expertise to enable them to source funding and develop strategic plans.

Vietnam:
World Bank Approves
US$125 million to Improve Sanitation

The World Bank approved a US$124.7 million credit for the Coastal Cities Environmental Sanitation Project, which will improve the waterways and urban environment of three of Vietnam's major coastal cities. Funds will be used to reduce flooding and improve the collection of sewage in Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, and Dong Hoi, through the construction of new sewers, drainage systems, wastewater treatment plants, and landfill sites. The project also funds capacity building for city departments and service providers who will manage and operate the new facilities.
