Mandate: The WFP is the food aid arm of the United Nations with a mandate to meet emergency food needs and to support long-term self-reliance in poor communities through development projects.
Structure: All headquarters food and non-food goods and services are purchased through the Procurement and Contracts Branch except Transportation Services, which are purchased by the Transport and Logistics Division.

Registration: Suppliers need to directly contact the appropriate WFP unit (either Procurement and Contracts or Transport and Logistics) to become qualified. The WFP is a member of the UNCSD (www.uncsd.org) but maintains its own requirements and criteria for most frequently purchased items.
Procurement Rules: Procurement is done through an open competitive process whereby ITBs are delivered to selected potential suppliers. In order to rationalize the procurement of frequently purchased non-food items, the WFP has entered into a number of long-term Blanket Purchase Agreements.
Field Procurement: The WFP maintains 6 regional procurement offices in Africa and 1 in India. There are also Country Offices around the world. Country Offices can purchase up to $US 100,000 in non-food items without HQ approval.
